Heavy rain changed our plans in Amarillo, Texas, but we still found space shuttles, brilliant barbecue and a speakeasy.

Amarillo in the Rain: Museums, Barbecue and a Canyon We Could Only Drive Through

🌧️ Plan B

We arrived in Amarillo through thunderstorms, and the next day was grey and wet. Out came the wet-weather plan.

✈️ Texas Air & Space Museum

The Texas Air & Space Museum near the airport was the perfect rainy-day stop, full of aviation history. We left a donation on the way out.

πŸ– Mitch's Texas Style BBQ

Dinner was at Mitch's Texas Style BBQ: The Mitch, green chile mac and cheese and banana pudding. Proper Texas comfort food.

🏞️ Palo Duro Canyon

When the sun finally came out we drove to Palo Duro Canyon. After all the rain the trails were closed, so we could only drive through, but the views of the red canyon walls were still spectacular. In the gift shop we bought a beautiful handmade pot.

🍸 Polk Street Evenings

On our last night we ate aguachile at Hacienda Meche, then had alcohol-free cocktails at the Paramount bar at the Barfield.

One thing to note: after heavy rain Palo Duro's trails can stay closed, so call ahead before you plan a hike.

πŸ“‹ Tips for Amarillo

  • β˜” Have an indoor plan ready for wet days.
  • πŸ– Don't leave without proper barbecue.
  • πŸ›οΈ Stop at Buc-ee's, if only for the tote bag.
  • 🌬️ It's very windy, so hold onto your hat.
