Dewsbury's hidden canal
Savile Town Wharf on the Calder and Hebble Navigation — Dewsbury's working canal basin that feels like a proper hidden gem.

I hadn't expected Dewsbury to surprise me. Tucked away from the busier streets is Savile Town Wharf on the Calder and Hebble Navigation — a working canal basin that feels like a proper hidden gem. Boats, old stone stables and a waterside path sit just a short walk from town, yet the mood is immediately quieter.
🚶 The towpath
On a warm September day I took a leisurely walk along the towpath. It is mostly level and easy going, with locks, the river nearby and enough greenery to feel properly away from traffic. You can keep it short or join longer stretches towards Mirfield, Ossett or Dewsbury Country Park. Wildlife, passing boats and the odd kingfisher (if you are lucky) make it feel further from the town than the map suggests.

🍺 Somewhere to sit
Right by the basin are the Leggers Inn and the Old Stables Coffee Shop — useful if you want a pint, a sandwich or simply somewhere to sit and watch the water. Savile Town Wharf is at 66 Mill Street East, Dewsbury, WF12 9BD.
One thing to note: this is a working canal basin, not a polished tourist trail — go for the atmosphere and an easy walk, not a big-ticket attraction list.

It was a simple, sunny afternoon — and all the better for being unexpected.
