Into the Mojave: Shoshone, California, and the Road We Couldn't Take
A storm-soaked drive into the Mojave, a Reuben sandwich in Shoshone and the closed road to China Ranch Date Farm.

π§οΈ After the Storm
We arrived in Las Vegas in the tail of a storm, and two days later we drove west into the Mojave with the desert still wet. It's a strange sight: puddles in the sand and clouds hanging low over the hills.
β Coffee First
On the way out we stopped for a coffee flight at Bad Owl Roastery and a latte at Desert Wind Coffee Roasters. Both were good fuel for a long empty road.
π₯ͺ Shoshone
Shoshone, California, is a tiny desert community with a big personality. We had an early lunch at the Crowbar Cafe and Bar, sharing a Reuben sandwich, because we knew there wouldn't be food for hours. Then we left a donation at the little Shoshone Museum, which is packed with local history.

π΄ The China Ranch That Wasn't
We'd planned to visit China Ranch Date Farm, a family-run oasis down a canyon road. Sadly the road was closed. It looked as though the heavy rain had caused subsidence. It's firmly on the list for next time.
One thing to note: desert roads can close after heavy rain, so check conditions before you commit to a long detour.
π Tips for a Mojave Day Out
- π§ Carry plenty of water and snacks.
- π½οΈ Eat when you can, as food stops are far apart.
- β½ Keep the tank topped up.
- π΅ Expect patchy phone signal.
