Halstead
A proper Essex market town on the River Colne — shops, coffee, cloth-mill heritage, and country lanes over to Coggeshall.
Halstead has the feel of a proper market town — independent shops along the high street, a cloth-mill past you can still sense by the Colne, and enough cafés to make a morning of it.
It’s an easy base for a day out: wander the centre, grab a coffee (The Little Book Cafe is a favourite), then take the lanes across to Coggeshall for timber frames and a quieter afternoon.
For a relaxed Essex hop, start here, enjoy the high street, and leave time for the drive between the two towns — that’s half the point.

Halstead first — then the lanes to Coggeshall
We started in Halstead — a proper Essex market town — then took the lanes to Coggeshall. Both worth it; Halstead had the edge.
